Biktarvy and Alcohol
We know abstaining from alcohol can be hard at times. However, the good news is, there are no clinical trials to establish the interaction between alcohol and Biktarvy. Nevertheless, the damaging effects of alcohol on the liver are common knowledge. They can be very harmful if you have a hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection or a history of liver problems. Therefore, if you enjoy drinking alcohol, consult your doctor to see if it is safe and how often you can have it.
The best bet will be to tell your healthcare professional if you have been previously diagnosed with liver problems. Besides liver problems, disclose if you have a history of hepatitis B and alcohol addiction.
You will notice the exclusion of prohibiting alcohol consumption on its label. It is because drinking alcohol will not affect the efficiency of Biktarvy. However, you still need to be aware that excessive consumption of alcohol can be dangerous if you have a weak immunity to HIV.

Excessive consumption of any alcoholic beverage can cause liver disease and cirrhosis. When these conditions happen, your treatment with Biktarvy can become less effective. Furthermore, hepatitis B can worsen the condition of a person with a history of HBV infection while on Biktarvy treatment.
The following symptoms will explain if you are already experiencing a liver problem:
- Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin)
- Dark-colored urine
- Light-colored stools
- Lack of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach pain
One of the severe adverse reactions of excessive alcohol consumption and Biktarvy is liver damage. Although alcohol is not part of Biktarvy’s list of interactions, liver damage can still happen. If you experience the mentioned symptoms, consult with your healthcare professional immediately. The solution for this condition may have two sides – either you take another HIV drug or quit alcohol.
