What is Celsentri (Maraviroc)?

Known as a CCR5-receptor antagonist, Celsentri is one of the most used drugs in treating HIV. It is often consumed with other ARV drugs, which means that the dosage requires another form of HIV drug to be used.

Celsentri Common Prescription:

• Common dosage requires 150 mg and 300 mg tablet
• For adults and children (2 years old + 10 kg in weight)

How does Celsentri work?

As mentioned, Celsentri is one of the CCR5-receptor antagonist drugs available today. This class of medicine works by inhibiting the entry of HIV into human cells. The medication binds to the body’s CCR5 (protein) and blocks the interaction of the virus HIV and CCR5 receptor, making it impossible for the virus to progress to its infection. Aside from this function, the Celsentri drug is also responsible for stopping the development of the most advanced stage of HIV, which is AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It also prevents other health complications from emerging.

Dosage

Typically, the dosage of Celsentri, also known as Maraviroc, is given according to the following variations:

• Individual’s age
• Weight
• Underlying medical problems
• Treatment response

Adult Dosage:

• 300 mg tablet (consume twice daily)

How to take it?

Patients can take Celsentri with or without meals. Make sure that the tablet is not crushed to preserve its functions. Following the same schedule should be done strictly to avoid skipped doses. Remember that following the doctor’s prescription and advice regarding the medication will help in the entire duration of HIV treatment. Maraviroc Side Effects

Celsentri’s side effects often show up in just a few days after your initial dosage. However, should these side effects become more severe and unable to manage at home, seek medical attention immediately.

Mild Side Effects: 

• Upper respiratory tract infections (such as cough and colds)
• Dizziness/Headache
• Constipation
• Urination problems
• Muscle aches
• Joint pain
• Diarrhea
• Trouble sleeping

Severe Side Effects

• Difficulty breathing (such as shallow breathing)
• Chest pain 
• Discomfort on the chest
• Pain in a specific part of the body, especially the limbs
• Sweating
• Fever
• White sores 
• Pain in the mouth
• Vomiting
• Nausea
• Yellowing of the skin or the eyes (Jaundice)
• Pain, aching, or tenderness on the right side below the ribs
• Loss of appetite

Storage

Store Celsentri where it can’t be easily reached by children. Store away from sunlight, moisture, and cold. After your first dosage, store the medicine in its original package. When it has reached its expiry date, discard the package properly.
