What is Prezista?

Prezista is an ARV (antiretroviral) medication that is often combined with other ARVs to treat HIV.  Prezista is the brand name of Darunuvir. It is available in 75mg, 150mg, 600mg, and 800mg film-coated tablets.

How does the drug work?

One of the most often utilized ARV in combination with Prezista is Ritonavir. Applied together, it becomes a viral treatment that is easy and accessible. As Prezista is a protease inhibitor, it is capable of impeding the virus’ capacity to replicate. Also, the medicine helps to ensure that AIDS will not emerge, providing resistance to the body’s immune system.

Dosage

The most common factors for Prezista’s dosage are:

• Bodyweight
• Age
• Active medical concerns
• Other medicines the patient is currently taking

Adult Dosage for first time ART users (take 1 per day)

• 800 mg + 150 mg cobicistat
• 800 mg + 100 mg ritonavir

Adult Dosage for experienced-ART users (take 2 per day)

• 600 mg + ritonavir 

Dosage for patients weighing 30 kgs

• 675 mg

Dosage for patients weighing 40 kgs

• 800 mg + 150 mg cobicistat
• 800 mg + 100 mg ritonavir

How to take it?

Swallow this drug once a day and be aware of the combination dose suggestions above. The drug must be consumed whole, so avoid chewing or breaking it. Additionally, following your GP’s advice regarding the treatment should be done at all times. The prescription contains the right flow of treatment, making it easy for you to take the medication. Note that Prezista treatment doesn’t have to be difficult.

Prezista Side Effects

Be aware of the following potential side effects in taking Prezista. Be sure to call your doctor if any of these persist.

Mild Side Effects: 

• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Headache
• Vomiting
• Rash
• Abdominal Pain

Severe Side Effects: 

• Jaundice
• Loss of appetite
• Fever
• Peeling or blistering of the skin
• Extreme tiredness
• Severe nausea
• Red, swollen, itchy or teary eyes
• Muscle pain or joint aches
• Pale or dark-coloured stools
• Mouth sores

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place. Always keep this medicine away from your children and pets. Preserving the medicine is a must in the treatment process.
