What is Sildenafil?
What is Sildenafil?
Sildenafil is a prescription medicine that treats impotence or erectile dysfunction in men. It is best known by its brand name Viagra. Another branded version of this medicine is Revatio, which is specifically designed for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension. As treatment for ED, Sildenafil is only prescribed for men, regardless of age.
How does Sildenafil work?
As mentioned, Sildenafil is available in two different branded versions. Both of them have different functions, which we will be tackling here. Consider the information below:
For erectile dysfunction:
Sildenafil functions by increasing the blood flow to the penis. This process helps a man keep and maintain an erection during the entire duration of sexual activity. Famously known as Viagra, it relaxes the muscles within the walls of the blood vessels and boosts blood circulation, particularly in the male genitalia.
For pulmonary arterial hypertension:
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a condition in which blood pressure increases in the arteries of the lungs. It is best known for its symptoms, such as shortness of breath and chest pain. Treatment for this condition involves Revatio, which functions by relaxing the muscles and improving the exercise capacity of both men and women.
How long does it take for Sildenafil to take effect?
It will take 30 – 60 minutes for Sildenafil (Viagra) to take effect. However, doctors recommend taking Sildenafil on an empty stomach to boost immediate absorption of the drug. This medication can last for 4 hours, enough to help men with their sexual drive problems.
On the other hand, Revatio should be taken at least three times daily. Doctors recommend taking Revatio about 4 to 6 hours apart, depending on the severity of the condition.
Precautions, Warnings, and Side Effects
Avoid consuming Viagra tablets if you are taking other medications for pulmonary arterial hypertension, such as Revatio. Although they share the same functions, Viagra is only specified for ED treatment. You may use them both on specific occasions; however, only do so if prescribed by your healthcare professional.
